Haridwar is the gateway to reach the holy shrines of Lord Vishnu or Hari and Lord Shiva or Hara. Haridwar is the only gateway to reach Shiva and Keshav at the foothills of Himalayan Mountains. Haridwar is the holiest place in the state of Uttarakhand. Legend is that Sage Kapil burned the ancestors of King Bhagirath with his own fire. It is known that Bhagirath performed penance for Lord Shiva here and by the grace of Lord Shiva descended the earth into the Ganges and flowed through the ashes of the ancestors and liberated them.
