Ujjain, with its ancient name Avantika, is one of the holiest Hindu shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. Mahakaleshwar Temple, the third of the twelve Jyotirlinga and Mahakali Temple, the ninth Shakti Peeth of the Ashtadasha Shakti Peeth are situated in Ujjain. The city of Avantika was transformed into Ujjain as a symbol of victory of Lord Shiva over the demon king Tripura. Ujjain is famous a holy shrine  for Kumbh Mela, held once in 12 years. Ujjain is famous to be an important pilgrimage destination for Tantric followers along with Shiva and Vaishnav sets. Mahakaleshwar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and said to be the abode of Lord Shiva.

Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple Ujjayini

The temple is located on the banks of the holy Kshipra River. Lord Shiva in the form of Mahakaleshwar derives sakthi from himself with his swayambhuh power. The idol of Mahakaleshwar is Dakshinamukhi which means facing south. Mahakaleshwar has the feature of Tantric Shiva Netra among the 12 Jyotirlingas. Another great temple in Ujjain is of Kalabhairava, the protecting deity of the city. Alcohol is one of the offerings made to the deity by hundreds of devotees who visit the temple every day.
