Amaralingeswara Temple popularily known as Amararama is in Amaravathi of Guntur District in Andhra Pradesh and present capital of the State. Legend is that Kumaraswamy (Karthikeya) launch Agneya Astra on Tarakasura and dissects the Shiva Ling wear in his neck into five parts. The first fragment was fallen down in Amravati, the present capital of Andhra Pradesh.

It was described in the legend that the fragments of Shiva Ling fallen in different parts on earth started to growing up to reach Kailas, to avoid the growing up, the fragments in Amara Rama of Amravati with the name Ameswar, in Soma Rama of Bhimavaram with the name of Someswara, in Ksheera Rama of Palakollu with the name of Kshetrarameswara, in Draksharama of East Godavari District with the name of Bheemeswara and Kumara Rama of Samalkot with the name of Kumara Rameswara were established as Shiva ling by Indra, Chandra (Moon), Vishnu, Surya (Sun)and Kumara Swamy (Skanda or Karthikeya) respectively to be worship by devotees in Kali Era (Yuga).

Bala Chamundi accompany Amara Lingeswar of Amravati, Sri Raja Rajeswari with Someswara of Bhimavaram, Parvathi with Ksheera Ramalingeswara of Palakollu, Manikyamba (One of the Sakthi Peet) with Bheemeswar of Draksharama and Bala Tripurasundari with Kumara Bheemeswra of Samalkot.

The earlier name of Amravati is “Dhanya Katakam”. The holy place is glorious and it exists on the bank of Krishna River. India established Amara Lingeswra in the holy place. Indra is immortal. Hence Shiva is famous as Amareswara here. The importance of the temple described in Skanda, Brahma and Padma Purana. The Flag Poles on four sides, the Centum of the Temple facing South and flow of Krishnaveni opposite to the eastern gate are the special features of the temple. The holy place called Panchayatana Kshetra. Three feet out of the twelve feet Shiva Ling is in the down floor and the remaining nine feet in the first floor. Indra is the first established and worshipped devotee of Lord Amareswar. It is believed that the Ling started growing up towards sky after establishment, Indra lowered a nail on the top of the ling to prevent its grown, that the grown of the Ling stopped and bleeding occurred from the top of the Ling. The stripes appear on the Ling are nothing but the stripes of the blood. Amaravathi called as Dhanya Katakam and Dharanikota in the Satavahana rule and they developed the temple during their reign. Abishek and seva will perform from the first floor since the top of the Ling available at the first floor. This temple is one of the Datta Kshetrams. The Goddess Bala Chamundi accompanies Amara Lingeswar in the holly place.

Amaralingeswara Temple timings & how to reach Amararamam

The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC), Kakinada Depot runs circular tours covering all the 5 Pancharamas (Amaravathi, Bhimavaram, Palakollu, Draksharama, and Samalkota) in a span of 24 hours mainly in Karthika Masam and Maha Shivaratri. The journey starts at 8:00 pm and ends at 8:00 pm next day covering 700 km approximately.

The temple kept open from 6 AM to 12 Noon and from 4 PM to Night 8 PM.
