Hinduism plays a significant role in human life from Krutha, Thretha and Dwapara eras continuing in present Kali era. In the entire eras, God wears several incarnations to punish evil and to protect sages and his devotees. The demons get boons from Brahma, the creator and used to show their sadism on sages and devotees of God in all these eras. Vishnu, status god and Shiva the destructor wear several incarnations to punish the evils and protect sages and their devotees from their harassment. The places where Vishnu and Shiva wear incarnations spread all over India are came in to existence as holy places with the respective incarnation names. There are 64 Temples of Shiva and twelve only being called as Dwadasa Jyothirlingas and holy places of Shiva The holy places of Dwadasa Jyothirlingas spread from Kedareswar in north to Rameswaram in South and from Vaidhyanath in the east to Somanath of Gujarat in the West protecting our nation from times immemorial.
The legend is that Brahma and Vishnu argued about supreme creation. Shiva prepared the three worlds as an endless Jyothirlinga pillar of light. Brahma decides to travel downwards along with the pillar and Vishnu to treavel upwards respectively, to find the end of the light. Brahma lied that he had found the end, while Vishnu agreed his defeat. Shiva appeared as a second pillar of light and find the lie told by Brahma. Shiva got angry on Brahma and cursed Brahma him not to have place in ceremonies and Vishnu would be worshipped in eras. Darshan of Dwadasha jyothirlingas feasible only on Spiritual culmination of human being. Every jyothirlingam became familiar with different names in the name of local shrine.
The holy place of Bhaidhyanath is the 5th Jyothirlinga among the Dwadasa Jyothirlingas situated in Deoghar, 7 km from Jaisheed Jn Railway Station of Jarkhand State. Vaidyanath jyotirlinga is located in the north eastern part of India Deoghar and known as funeral place. This was a funeral place, where corpses are burnt and post-death ceremonies were performed and a center of tantric cults like Kapalika where Lord Shiva worshipped as smasan vasi.
It is a temple complex consisting of the main temple of Baba Baidyanath and 21 other temples. The lingam is of a cylindrical form about 5 inches in diameter and projects about 4 inches from the centre of a large slab of basalt. It is not possible to ascertain how much of the lingam is buried.
As per legend Ravana, the demon king worshipped Shiva in the present site of the temple and used the boons to cause disorder in the world. Ravana offered his ten heads to Shiva. Shiva pleased to his offerings and cured the injuries of Ravana as Vaidhya and the temples derives its name as Vaidyanath. In Matsyapurana the place described as Arogya Baidyanath the holy place where Shakti assists Shiva in treating people from incurable diseases. It is believed that all people irrespective gender of LEO Zodic sign visit and worship the Bhaidhyanadh Jyothirlingam will be relieved from all their hurdles in life.
Lakhs of Pilgrims from Bihar State bring Ganga Water from Sultanganj of Bhagalpur District carry the water in Kavadi, and walk all the distance of on108 km barefoot The pilgrims are called Dak Bam and they do not stop even once in their journey from Sultangunj in Sravana (Telugu month). Unlike at Somanath, Rameswaram and Srisailam, devotees may perform abhisekam personally and the Pandas assist in the Abhisekam.
There are 22 temples in the same campus of different Gods and Goddesses among which Lord Shiva is empowered as being supreme. The courtyard has eleven other temples, mainly of Maa Parvathi, Maa Kali, Maa Jagat Janani, Kal Bhairav and Lakshminarayan. Maa parvathi temple is tied up with the main temple, with huge red sacred threads which is unique and worthy of reverence, showing the unity of Shiva and Shakti.
The temple opens at 4AM in the morning in normal days. Shodashpachar performed from 4AM to 5-30AM by the head priest and will be open to devotees for their worship of the Shivalinga. The priests pour jal on the lingam and the pilgrims permit to pour water and offer flowers and Bilva leaf upon the lingam. The temple will be closed from 3-30 to 6-00PM. Shringat Puja performed after re-opening at 6PM and finally temple will be closed at 9PM. The closing time will be extended in Sravana month.
